A young man was getting ready to graduate from his college. For many years he had admired a sports car in a dealer’s showroom and knowing that his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.
On the morning of his graduation day his father called him into his study. He told him how proud he was to have such a fine son. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. The young man opened the box and was disappointed to find a leather bound bible.
Angrily he said, “with all your money you give me a bible?” and stormed out of house never to return again.
Many years passed. The young man became successful. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family but thought he should go back to his old father whom he had not seen from the graduation day. Before he could make arrangements he got a telegram stating his father has passed away and willed all of his possessions to his son. When he arrived at his father’s house sadness and regret filled his heart. He searched for his father’s important paper and found the still new bible on the table. With tears he opened the holy book and turned pages. Suddenly a car key dropped from the bible. It had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same dealer of the sports car. On the tag was the date of his graduation and the words…… Paid in full.
Moral of the story: “The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.”
