The world is full of opportunities to be seized. And, as you have seen, new ones turn up everyday. But the key to making the most of those opportunities is action. What if some of the people you have read about failed to act on their ideas? This country wouldn't be what it is today. Dream your dreams but motivate yourself to put your plans into action. Have the courage to act on your ideas, for in doing so, you will be on your way to achieving your goals in life.
When business is concerned, people are not measured in inches, pounds, college degree or family background. They are measured instead by results and by the size of thinking. How big we think determines the size of our accomplishments.
A simplified way to think of a company's true liabilities is to think of opposite of true assets. Lack of enthusiasm, employees who have no imagination and no new ideas, employees with no determination and no integrity are examples of liabilities. Jealously, back biting, office politics and dishonest maneuvering to get ahead are other examples.
Beware of business that cannot control their true liabilities, sooner or later they will up in failure. They do not represent opportunities for the motivated person who wishes to get ahead.
Independence means that you accumulate wisdom, knowledge from all the sources, but when action is required, you initiate the action, you make the decision, you accept the consequences. Independence is responsibility, you, not somebody else, is the person who gets the praise or the blame for what you decide to do.
Finally, independence requires an ability to accept change and to accommodate change. This is a changing world, things happen fast. What was good for yesterday is not always good for today. You cannot always lean on old times anymore than you can lean on others to make decision for you. I believe no one should invest time or money in some field or endeavor that is out of harmony with the times. Think ahead - use good judgement.
Consider the apprentice juggler. It is not until the balls are being dropped that the trainee is pushing the limits of his ability. Having mastered one juggling technique there is always more to learn. The best jugglers in the world drop things when pushing their limits.
A leader in a creative world has to provide clear direction and facilitate flexible working. Staff need to understand clearly the direction and purpose of their company but they need to be allowed to follow these with latitude to develop new and better ways of producing the products and serving the customers. Too much prescription leads to bland uniformity and annihilates creativity.
An organization is rarely lead by leaders, rather it is lead by expectations of the future. The role of the leader is to shape those expectations.
Yet innovation, by its nature, requires deviation.
